Prince Charles Ex-Aide Quits Charity Role Amid Honor Claims

LONDON (AP) — A former close aide to Prince Charles stepped down temporarily from his role as chief executive of a royal charity amid reports that he helped secure an honor for a Saudi donor.

The Sunday Times and Mail on Sunday newspapers reported that Michael Fawcett coordinated support for an honor for Saudi businessman Mahfouz Marei Mubarak bin Mahfouz.

The Times said the businessman donated sums of more than 1.5 million pounds ($2.1 million) to The Prince’s Foundation to fund heritage restoration projects of interest to Charles, including residences Charles used.

The report said Charles gave Mahfouz an honorary CBE, or Commander of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire, at a private ceremony in 2016. The Saudi denies wrongdoing.

The Prince’s Foundation said in a statement that Fawcett offered to temporarily step down from active duties as the organization’s chief executive while an investigation takes place. It said Fawcett will assist the investigation.

Fawcett began his royal service in 1981 as a footman to Queen Elizabeth II and later became Charles’ assistant valet.

In 2003, he was accused of selling unwanted royal gifts but was cleared of financial misconduct allegations. He resigned from his position as valet but continued to work in other roles including as Charles’ events planner.

Princess Charlene In ‘Reassuring’ Condition After Sudden Hospitalization

PARIS (AP) — Monaco’s Princess Charlene is in “reassuring” condition after being suddenly hospitalized with complications from a serious sinus infection, the principality’s palace said Friday.

Princess Charlene, a former Olympic swimmer who has been on an extended stay in her home country of South Africa, suffered an unspecified “malaise” overnight Wednesday, the palace said. Earlier, palace officials said she was in stable condition.

“Her Highness is followed closely by her medical team, which confirms her medical state is reassuring,” the palace said in a late night statement. It did not elaborate.

Princess Charlene, 43, is married to Monaco’s ruler, Prince Albert II, and they have twin children.

She underwent an undisclosed operation in South Africa last month. The French newspaper Nice-Matin quoted Albert at the time as saying that “the intervention went well, the princess is resting and we think tenderly of her.”

Australian Musk Duck Recorded Saying ‘You Bloody Fool’

If it looks like a duck, swims like a duck and says what sounds like “you bloody fool,” then it’s probably a male Australian musk duck called Ripper.

The waterbird is thought to have learned the phrase ― which can also sound like “you bloody food” ― from a caretaker hand-rearing him in captivity at the Tidbinbilla Nature Reserve near Canberra in the late 1980s, according to new research.

Ripper also imitated the sound of a door slamming shut in audio initially recorded by birder Peter J. Fullagar in July 1987. The sounds were recently resurfaced by fellow scientist Carel ten Cate from Leiden University in the Netherlands as part of his study into the vocal learnings of birds.

According to ten Cate’s profile on his university’s website, he was looking into vocal learnings when he stumbled across an “obscure reference” to Ripper.

“When I read it at first I thought, ‘it’s a hoax, it can’t be true.’ But it turned out to be true,” he said, per The Guardian.

Toddler Found Alive And Well After 3 Days Missing In Australian Woods

AJ Elfalak

A 3-year-old Australian toddler was found alive and well after missing for three days in the wilderness near his family’s rural home north of Sydney.

AJ Elfalak, who is autistic and nonverbal, has been “clinging” to his mom ever since he was found Monday kneeling in a river drinking water after disappearing Friday, dad Anthony Elfalak told The Guardian

“It’s a miracle. He has been bitten by ants and he has fallen, but he is alive. It’s amazing,” said the dad. “My leg, my hips, my ankles … I can’t walk. I have been in the bush for four days with no sleep. We didn’t stop.”

He added: “I know I was acting frantic, but no one can understand what it’s like going through what we went through. I feel incredible.”

A crowd of volunteers hunted desperately for the boy throughout the wooded area. AJ was finally spotted by searchers in a helicopter who saw the completely soaked little boy in the river.

Elfalak said his son had “never wandered off” before. The family moved to the property just months ago.

Now AJ is “nice and warm. He’s perfect, he’s happy, he’s healthy, he is sleeping. I cannot be happier right now,” said his mom, Kelly Elfalak.

A local police official told reporters that AJ’s access to water no doubt helped him survive.

“The longer something goes on, the more worried you become you won’t get an outcome such as this … it’s a good news story for the entire community,” said New South Wales Police Superintendent Tracy Chapman.
