‘Lesson 6 – [Series 2] Learn to Enjoy Painting in Acrylics with Paul Taggart’



As always FILMED IN REAL-TIME, so that you can see every stroke, every colour mix, every blend, every aspect of the method being used – you will miss nothing, you will be privy to everything that Artist & Author Paul Taggart carries out – seeing his every action, all accompanied by his detailed running commentary.

WORK CONTINUES ON THE MAIN COMPOSITION – a painting within a painting – a landscape within a still-life – which follows lesson by lesson until the final touches.

You can either follow along using the same reference photographs as Paul, or you are welcome to decide on your own ‘View Through My Window’ – the decision is entirely up to you.

LESSON 6 and work continues on one specific area – not as you would come to expect, working from the top of the painting down to the bottom (usually the distant background to the foreground); but, uniquely in this case, from the true distance in this painting, which is the exterior view of the tree and forest, framed within the interior view.

Having ended the last lesson with the first layers being applied to the tree and distant forest/bushes and shrubs; you now continue work on this ‘landscape’ element of the composition.

First to get worked on is that all-important sky, in which ‘negative’ painting comes into its own – watch as Paul “nibbles” into the tree, thus giving the sky a more interesting shape as well as revealing a more dynamic silhouette.

Then Paul turns to the focal point of this landscape, the structural tree – firstly working on the leaf platforms; using graduated colour mixes to work through to the ‘blue’ reflected lights and ‘yellow’ sunlit patches. Although he does hold back on going as far as highlights and super-highlights; after all, this is a distant landscape framed by the window and foreground still-life and as such is subject to aerial perspective.

The branches and trunk are worked up in the same manner, finished off with delicate slices of golden light from the setting sun.

Finally, the first laying down of lights and darks to effect the undulating surface of the grazed field.

You will discover that scuffs and dry paint strokes provide useful techniques for effecting visual texture throughout this area. You will comme to appreciate how varying brush-strokes and directional brush-strokes can be exploited, using one round brush, to depict slabs of colour, ticks of colour, slices of colour, the thinnest of strokes – no need for a raft of different brushes, when a single round brush can offer such versatility.

[Box-Set Trailer] Series 5 Learn to Enjoy Painting in Oils with Paul Taggart



“Welcome to our Highland Studio and ‘[Series 5] of Learn to Enjoy Painting in Oils with Paul Taggart’, where we are Making LIGHT Work for You’ – the purpose of which is to show you how to look for light in your subject and how to maximise it in your painting; not only through a deeper understanding of the power that coloured greys can bring to your colour mixing palette, but also through the exploitation of the twin traditional oil painting techniques of glazing and tinting.

Work-along with me on this view and you will come to appreciate the quality of light in your subject, whatever the conditions of the day. Even an overcast landscape, on a seemingly dull day, is imbued with light in one form or another. The overall effect may be subtler, but look closely and you will discover myriad colours in the simplest of elements.

This is oil painting at its best, at its richest, at its most subtle, at its most exciting. Work-along with me and discover for yourself the beauty of working with the traditional method of building up layers, from dark to light; using all the techniques covered thus far in Series 1 to 4 of ‘Learn to Enjoy Painting in Oils with Paul Taggart’.

Lesson 5 – ‘[Series 3] Learn to Enjoy Painting in Sketching Pastels with Paul Taggart’



Because you are working with a limited palette, you don’t have the luxury of being able to work through varying values of an extensive range of colours. Because you are working with sketching pastels, you don’t have the opportunity to apply too many layers.

BUT ….. this need not restrict you from exploiting techniques borrowed from Paul’s traditional method of painting. In so doing you will be able to achieve far richer results than you might suppose when working with sketching pastels. Results gained through the use of layers and correctly identified values of colour.

Which is why each of the lessons in this series can be viewed as stand-alone tutorials in their own right; as here in Lesson 5, which you will find to be AN INVALUABLE LESSON IN EFFECTIVELY DESCRIBING THE VARYING CHARACTERISTICS in DIFFERENT SPECIES OF TREES.

You will find this AN INVALUABLE LESSON IN ACHIEVING A VARIETY OF COLOURS by EXPLOITING SURFACE COLOUR MIXING.
You will also learn about the importance of rendering the correct values and how to go about achieving those.

You join Artist & Author Paul Taggart as he embarks on the second layer of pastel; in which you will be creating not only volume, but also introducing sunlight into the composition. As ever you will be working from the top of the composition downwards and as such, the trees are the first elements to get your attention.

Firstly, however, Paul needs to work up the reflected lights, which are the blue-biased cool colours throughout the trees. This he does either by using the available colours of pastels in the particular set of pastels, OR by surface colour mixing.

As ever this lesson is packed full of hints, tips and techniques, shared not only in what you can see through close-up shots and real-time filming, but just as importantly via Paul’s running commentary throughout. He shares with you reasons and consequences; such as where and when to apply highlights, where and when to apply yellow and hold back on the colour.

You will understand the function of blending and how to selectively manipulate blending to create volume and form. Paul explains how painting with a brush is emulated in the way in which you exploit the blender to enhance the structural qualities of the various trees.

Having completed the first pass through these trees in working up the reflected lights and creating the denser, softer darks and mid dark values you are then ready to move on to the sunlit, warmer sections.

As with any painting, you do need to pay attention when working through to the lightest highlights – patience in gradually doing so being the way to approach this. It is tempting to get those highlights applied, but pay particular attention to how Paul approaches this.

You will learn how to exploit varying pressures as you apply the pastel to the surface, how to exploit the piece of pastel in your grasp, how to exploit directional strokes and so much more.

In working through the section of trees, you will naturally work on the distant building and in so doing will also be negatively painting the trees that wrap around it.

Now work continues down the composition and the first eflected lights are placed across the ploughed field – this is about aerial perspective, vanishing points, perspective and so on – none of it is difficult, as you will soon discover through Paul’s simplification of the process.

‘Lesson 15 – [Series 3] Learn to Enjoy Painting in Oils with Paul Taggart’



The purpose of this series is to break down the three principal layers of this traditional method – we have already covered working with ‘thinned’ mixes in ‘[Series 2] Learn to Enjoy Painting in Oils with Paul Taggart’ – ‘Learn to Enjoy Painting in Oils with Paul Taggart [Series 2] – https://vimeo.com/ondemand/artworkshopwithpauloils2 and in [Series 4] will be covering ‘glazing’ and ‘tinting’.

LESSON 15 and you join Artist & Author Paul Taggart for the finishing layer and working from the back to the front of the composition, you will return to the top of the painting.

Gently does it in Lesson 15, as you seek to balance the painting for the final time. This is where the magic happens. Now you will be adding the ‘sunny’ touches and re-inforcing reflected lights; you will be adding those splashes of subtle colour that bring the painting to life.

You will be working through yellow and blue lights to the final bright, pure-white highlights, those deep lights that reflect the ambient light – this is what makes working with oil paints such an enriching experience.

In this lesson you will also come to appreciate how colours affect each other. Watch as Paul now scuffs in the purple heather – faint in the distant landscape, yet the effect of purple against the greens and yellows does so much to add depth and character to the background rocky hills and steep inclines.

Then it’s onto the trees that surround the distant cottage, where Paul wishes to introduce more contrast, to again develop greater depth and character. Watch as he brings the dark undergrowth into view, where trunks and branches intertwine and catch flecks of light.

And finally, you may feel that the grassy areas were successfully achieved up to now; but watch what happens as Paul introduces those warm oranges and yellows throughout, exploiting directional brush-strokes as he goes to define those grasses that stand tall and erect from those that are flattened out.

As always, this lesson is filmed in real-time so that you can truly work-along with Paul, so that you don’t miss any of his techniques, hints and tips, or any of his colour mixes created from his nucleus six-colour palette. Listen carefully to Paul’s running commentary for those topical tips that only come from years of experience as a professional fine artist whose passion for his craft is something that he loves to share.

The subject for this composition was chosen for its wealth of varying textures; perfect for a painting in which Paul sets out to demonstrate the role of the impasto layer in the traditional method of working with oils – the rocky outcrop, the trees and undulating land (covered in bracken, grass and so on), the sheep, the stone building in the foreground and the whitewashed building in the background, the cinder path. It is also filled with varying perspectives and vanishing points that draw the viewer’s eye. Contrasting light and shade play a strong part in creating dynamism. Here you have everything with which to practice the art of working with bristle brushes.

Lesson 2 – ‘[Series 4] Learn to Enjoy Painting in Pastels with Paul Taggart’



LESSON 2 and work continues on preparing the textural underlayer that was started in LESSON 1 on which the pastel work is subsequently applied; the preparatory work for which was previously covered, as detailed below. Paul introduces you to the texture paste and brushes with which this textured underlayer is rendered and passes on a multitude of hints and tips for how to work with textured paste. Close-up shots allow you to see not only how Paul applies the texture, but also the resultant effect and how both the texture paste and brushes can be exploited and manipulated to their fullest to achieve myriad different textures. See this as an opportunity to experiment and discover for yourself how these tools could provide you with an invaluable source of creativity in your pastel work. As with all of Paul’s tutorials, he works on the basis of providing you with various techniques, with which you can move forward in your work, to develop unique styles and techniques of your own. Watch as Paul experiments himself with different approaches to ‘sculpt’ and mimic the textures that inspire him in the subject, which was deliberately chosen for its varied textural characteristics. You will see him stipple and scuff, drag and sgraffito, blot and smooth, using a bristle brush and a smooth brush, with directional brush-strokes and more. This is exciting stuff, imbuing the composition with energetic characteristics.

Having allowed the underlayer to dry completely you NOW MOVE ON TO CREATING THE DARK UNDERPAINTING – which is where the accents in the composition are established. You could work in watercolours, or acrylics for this layer. However, Paul now switches to SOFT PASTELS, which, once applied, are then strengthened and fixed to the surface through the use of acrylic medium.

For this dark underpainting he is also MAXIMISING COMPLEMENTARY COLOURS to create a vibrant contrast to the rather subdued colour palette that appears throughout this composition’s subject matter. Again, exciting and exhilarating stuff.

Again you will hear Paul encourage you to experiment with different approaches to this underpainting, both in terms of the method, the media, the technique and the colour choices.

LESSON 2 ENDS with the completed application of the dry soft pastels, in preparation of the next stage in rendering this dark underpainting.

TECHNIQUE – For the main composition you will be working with a three-stage system for creating physical texture. Physical texture may seem a little strange for pastels, which are generally simply applied to pastel paper or to a surface that has a ‘tooth’.

To explain this fully, Paul refers you to the study that was created for [Series 2], the view of an Italian village. In this you will see that all of the textures are created visually; they are ‘visual’ textures that rely solely on the texture of the ‘tooth’ of the surface on which the pastel painting is worked.

Imagine, if instead of simply relying on the tooth of the pastel paper, you could create and therefore control, the texture over which the pastel is laid. This would also allow you the opportunity to create a stronger base, one that would enable you to apply more layers of pastel – which, in turn, gives you the opportunity to exploit the richness of these pigments, much as you would when working in layers with the traditional technique of working from the darkest accents through to the super-highlights.

Furthermore, this controlled application would result in ‘structural’ texture, as opposed to merely ‘visual’ texture. For which I am using texture paste.

‘Lesson 11 – [Series 2] Learn to Enjoy Painting in Acrylics with Paul Taggart’



You join Artist & Author Paul Taggart as he embarks on an element in this painting which at first may appear bland an uninteresting, the foreground window shelf. However it is not, for it is actually filled with myriad colours, affected as it is by many different sources of light – sunlight from the late afternoon sun that cuts a swathe through the exterior landscape and through the window; lamplight from the table lamp; reflected ‘local coloured’ lights from surrounding elements and reflective glass.

Watch the effects of surface mixing as the camera pulls back from close-up filming, required to show you the creator/painter how to subtly achieve the bigger picture that is ultimately seen by the viewer.

You will hear Paul say time and again, not to hurry the process, for the work that is required here will serve to enrich and balance painting – at one point imploring you “….don’t be panicked into spoiling this surface….”.

This is a lesson about discovering colour and light, about reading the subject and interpreting what you see.

What is more, this lesson will serve you well if ever you should work on a still-life, for the surface on which the still-life resides within this composition is no different than any other surface on which a still-life is set and is of crucial importance.

Without the work that you will now be putting into this element, your painting will appear flat, shadows will be dismal, structure and form of what is, in effect, a miniature still-life, will appear dead and lifeless.

You will learn how ‘negative’ painting of objects and their shadows is finessed through painting this window shelf. You will learn how to exploit and maximise blending, losing strokes/edges and working restricted wet-into-wet.

Now you will appreciate the importance of the dark underpainting, as it is integrated into your working through from dark to light, using transparent mixes and occasional ticks of opaque light.

Having worked through to the point at which the slabs of light need to be introduced, Paul turns to the wire base of the table lamp. Again, this needs to be worked through gradually so that it is appears deceptively simple to the viewer, but in reality without the work you will now be undertaking, it will look insubstantial; for as Paul says in his running commentary, although your are painting a metal object, this is nevertheless “… an object in light and space…”.

Your careful work will render it three-dimensional, as you introduce structure and form through blending and softening of brush-strokes, the introduction of warm and cool lights, with final ticks of highlights drawing the eye.

‘Lesson 17 – [Series 3] Learn to Enjoy Painting in Oils with Paul Taggart’



LESSON 17 – now you have reached the final lesson in your journey on this painting, in which Artist & Author Paul Taggart is working with ‘impasto’ – the sole technique used to depict this highly textured scene. You will have come to appreciate how this technique can be used in its own right, not only as a painting method, but, just as importantly and the point of this series; you will now be able to fully exploit the impasto stage in the traditional method of working in layers from thin mixes to thick impasto mixes to glazes and tints.

The purpose of this series is to break down the three principal layers of this traditional method – we have already covered working with ‘thinned’ mixes in ‘[Series 2] Learn to Enjoy Painting in Oils with Paul Taggart’ – ‘Learn to Enjoy Painting in Oils with Paul Taggart [Series 2] – https://vimeo.com/ondemand/artworkshopwithpauloils2 and in [Series 4] will be covering ‘glazing’ and ‘tinting’.

Working in exactly the same manner as you have in previous lessons covering this final stage, you will work through to selective super-highlights; taking care to keep this final section balanced in line with the rest of the composition.

First to get Paul’s attention is the garden in front of the stone building, then the stone wall in the garden and finally the foreground grasses.

Again you may have felt that these had been completed in the previous stage, but wait until you see how these final graduated mixes of colour affect these areas and bring them to life.

The entire painting is now richer and every element in it comes alive with texture, structure, volume and form. It has body and character.

All of which can only be achieved with impasto, all of which can be used as a stand-alone technique.

But just imagine these impasto layers enriched even further with subtle glazes and tints.
Imagine the results were you to work with even more graduated layers of colour, interwoven with glazes and tints.

As always, this lesson is filmed in real-time so that you can truly work-along with Paul, so that you don’t miss any of his techniques, hints and tips, or any of his colour mixes created from his nucleus six-colour palette. Listen carefully to Paul’s running commentary for those topical tips that only come from years of experience as a professional fine artist whose passion for his craft is something that he loves to share.

The subject for this composition was chosen for its wealth of varying textures; perfect for a painting in which Paul sets out to demonstrate the role of the impasto layer in the traditional method of working with oils – the rocky outcrop, the trees and undulating land (covered in bracken, grass and so on), the sheep, the stone building in the foreground and the whitewashed building in the background, the cinder path. It is also filled with varying perspectives and vanishing points that draw the viewer’s eye. Contrasting light and shade play a strong part in creating dynamism. Here you have everything with which to practice the art of working with bristle brushes.

‘Lesson 5 – [Series 2] Learn to Enjoy Painting in Acrylics with Paul Taggart’



As always FILMED IN REAL-TIME, so that you can see every stroke, every colour mix, every blend, every aspect of the method being used – you will miss nothing, you will be privy to everything that Artist & Author Paul Taggart carries out – seeing his every action, all accompanied by his detailed running commentary.

WORK CONTINUES ON THE MAIN COMPOSITION – which follows lesson by lesson until the final touches.

You can either follow along using the same reference photographs as Paul, or you are welcome to decide on your own ‘View Through My Window’ – the decision is entirely up to you.

In LESSON 5 you now start to establish the darker accents on which you will build forthcoming lights and highlights; as you work from light-to-dark-to-light in layers.

Now is the time to re-draw the vital elements in this composition – but as Paul stresses, this is not about being proficient in drawing; it is about being fluid and loose as you seek to re-establish these elements. Watch at how those ‘straight’ lines are executed by Paul in a suggestive manner, rather than in a rigid fashion.

Having satisfied himself on his redrawing, Paul then turns his attention to those dark colour mixes that are essential in preparing the way for those lights and highlights to work effectively – for as he constantly re-iterates, for the lights to work you first of all need the darks against which they can shine.

Firstly Paul determines the principal light and shaded areas; then he turns to specific areas for development – not as you would come to expect, working from the top of the painting down to the bottom (usually the distant background to the foreground); but, uniquely in this case, from the true distance in this painting, which is the exterior view of the tree and forest, framed within the interior view.

A painting within a painting – a landscape within a still-life.

Thus this lesson ends with the first layers being applied to the tree and distant forest/bushes and shrubs. You get the first hints of the deepest recesses, the darkest of darks; then the first hints of reflected ‘blue’ lights and sunlit ‘yellow’ lights.
