Comparing Different Ways to Multiply Integers

There’s an image making its way through Facebook and other social sites showing how Japanese children can perform multiplication using a graphical technique that doesn’t involve memorizing multiplication tables or performing rote manipulations.

I find it interesting that this is somehow seen as magical. When you look at the underlying mathematics, it’s not that much different than the traditional way we multiply in the West. What it does point out is that concepts like multiplication are often only superficially emphasized and understood.

This thirteen minute video talks about the underlying mathematics of this alternate approach to multiplication and how we think about mathematics. Not included in the video is an improved “baseball” version of multiplying graphically, but you can find this in the online slides (slides six and seven, specifically).

Also, since posting my video it has been pointed out to me that this is •not• the way Japense children are typically taught.  So while the video refers to it as “Japanese” it’s more correctly a graphic alternative to traditional methods.
