[Box-Set Trailer] Series 5 Learn to Enjoy Painting in Oils with Paul Taggart

“Welcome to our Highland Studio and ‘[Series 5] of Learn to Enjoy Painting in Oils with Paul Taggart’, where we are Making LIGHT Work for You’ – the purpose of which is to show you how to look for light in your subject and how to maximise it in your painting; not only through a deeper understanding of the power that coloured greys can bring to your colour mixing palette, but also through the exploitation of the twin traditional oil painting techniques of glazing and tinting.

Work-along with me on this view and you will come to appreciate the quality of light in your subject, whatever the conditions of the day. Even an overcast landscape, on a seemingly dull day, is imbued with light in one form or another. The overall effect may be subtler, but look closely and you will discover myriad colours in the simplest of elements.

This is oil painting at its best, at its richest, at its most subtle, at its most exciting. Work-along with me and discover for yourself the beauty of working with the traditional method of building up layers, from dark to light; using all the techniques covered thus far in Series 1 to 4 of ‘Learn to Enjoy Painting in Oils with Paul Taggart’.

Check out each of the four companion ‘Painting Topical Techniques for Oils with Paul Taggart’ box-sets, from Series 1 to Series 4, to discover even more invaluable techniques, which will apply to this subject matter – such as Aerial Perspective, Structural and Visual Texture and so much more.

As with all our tutorials, everything is filmed in real-time, there is no speed painting here … no editing out … even problems and mistakes are shown, so that you will learn how to overcome them. Work-along with me and follow Eileen’s close-up filming to discover the joy of working with oil paints using traditional techniques, whilst I describe in detail the process and share a host of tips and hints through my running commentary.

You can either work-along with me on the same subject, or use your own, it is entirely up to you – we provide FREE-TO-DOWNLOAD REFERENCE PHOTOGRAPHS available from artworkshopwithpaul on Flickr – https://www.flickr.com/photos/paul_taggart_artist_and_author/

We look forward to your company and as always, send you best wishes for your painting, from Eileen and myself.

Episode 1 – ‘Oils Workshop, Alla Prima, working from Dark to Light, with Paul Taggart’

EPISODE 1 and you join Paul on his reference gathering trip, describing his observations/choices and making his thumbnails; then in to the studio and further work preparing for the choice of subjects, drawing out the composition and applying the first underpainting layer of thin complementary colours, which are chosen to provide a vibrant counterfoil to subsequent layers of colour. Think of this episode as a stand-alone tutorial on how to make the most of reference gathering when out and about, not to mention how to work out your composition, before transferring that information to your painting surface.

“Welcome to our studio in the Highlands of Scotland, from where we bring you this complete, start-to-finish, work-along Workshop in Oils, using the traditional techniques of working Alla Prima in layers from Dark to Light – you can download this box-set to own forever, or stream here on Vimeo.

Fully narrated throughout and filmed in real time – as with all of our painting tutorials – I guide you step-by-step through the entire composition, from the first reference gathering, thumbnails and drawing-out, through the layers to the very last strokes of paint with all colour mixes demonstrated on my palette.

SUBJECT – when we select subjects for our tutorials, we carefully choose subjects that would best suit the technique that I am demonstrating – so it is with the subjects featured in this composition; which are intended to help you become more confident about including figures in a landscape, understand the value of aerial perspective and deal with the various angles and perspective of subjects such as buildings and a boat.

TRADITIONAL TECHNIQUES form the keystone of my work as a Fine Artist, so it is with my video art tutorials. For this particular composition, I specifically chose to demonstrate the versatility of working Alla Prima, with impasto mixes, gradually layering through from the dark accents to the lightest highlights – in other words, from dark-to-light, using one of the principal techniques in oil painting that enables an artist to work on-the-spot with a nuclear painting kit. The result is a rich painting filled with texture and character, all achieved through maximising the impasto mixes by exploiting bristle brushes.

As can be seen in this workshop, quite apart from being one of the principal stages in a multi-layered traditional method, the Impasto stage can be used as a stand-alone technique in its own right and excitingly so.

We look forward to your company and as always, send you best wishes for your painting, from Eileen and myself.”

Episode 2 – ‘Oils Workshop, Alla Prima, working from Dark to Light, with Paul Taggart’

EPISODE 2 and now the compositional elements need to be re-established over the thin underpainting. Following this, Paul then shows how to use retouching varnish on a painting that has dulled-down, having been left to dry, to ensure the colours on the surface are enlivened and enriched. Then work begins on the impasto painting, starting with the SKY – which requires the application of graduated colours. Identifying colours in the subject, colour mixing, working in graduated bands of colour from the top of the painting to the horizon, blending – all these and more are covered in this episode. The episode ends with the first beginnings on the turreted building in the background.

Episode 3 – ‘Oils Workshop, Alla Prima, working from Dark to Light, with Paul Taggart’

EPISODE 3 and work continues on the two buildings, firstly developing the turreted building, working through to the super-highlights on the window frames. As Paul demonstrates and you work-along with him, you will come to understand that painting an architectural element within a composition is not about reproducing every minute detail. It is about understanding how light falls across a building and how the differing planes of its structure cast shadows. By working through graduated colour mixes with either a warm bias, or a cool bias, thinking of the areas you are working on as a series of jig-saw pieces, you will successfully render the subject. Paul shows how to simplify the process of understanding perspective – which is all about observation and does not require a ‘technical’ understanding of perspective.

Lesson 22 – ‘[Series 4] Learn to Enjoy Painting in Oils with Paul Taggart’

Artist & Author Paul Taggart continues to move through the painting in sections, first working up the impasto layer, then, once that is dry, working over it with glazes. You now join Paul as he prepares to work through the glazes on the previously laid impasto layer on the sea and the pebbled beach of the middle distance, as well as the slipway.

First however, he returns to a section directly beneath the front face of the distant cliff, low wall of rocks beneath that and the furthest most point of the slipway; where he feels that there is not enough distinction between the three, giving the appearance that all of these elements are as one. To increase depth and aerial perspective in this instance requires the use of ‘tints’ – basically glazes made up of colour mixes to which white is added.

This is an especially useful section within this episode, for you not only get to see how tints function, but just as importantly how to apply them and work them into the painted areas. Easy when you know how, but not so when you don’t and this is where you get to appreciate just how useful Paul’s running commentary is; as he explains precisely how to manipulate a tint through some simple hints and tips, whilst demonstrating the technique.

Watch as the stony shoreline becomes imbued with what appears to be a multitude of subtle colours, thanks to the interaction of the underpainting and underlying impasto layer with the simplest of glazes. When you take into consideration that in this study, Paul is not working through many layers of glazes, it will become apparent to you just what can be achieved were you to experiment with even more glaze layers.

Having worked through these three main areas of glazes; Paul then returns to his impasto colour mixes, to continue with the impasto layer for the remainder of the painting, finishing this episode on the sandy beach. The remainder of the impasto layer on this study being continued in Lesson 23.

Once again, Artist & Author Paul Taggart purposefully goes against the normal procedure of working through the defined layers; so that you can follow-along at a gentle pace and thereby gain a better understanding of the role of impasto and its influence on subsequent glazes. The usual method of working through this traditional technique being to work in layers as follows:-

Layer 1 – drawing out : blocking-in with thin underpainting : re-drawing to establish some detail
Layer 2 – impasto to establish structural and visual texture (this layer can also comprise a number of layers)
Layer 3 – glazing (which can comprise of as many glazing layers as you wish to introduce)

To learn more about working with thick/impasto paint mixes, please refer to the box-set ‘[Series 3] Learn to Enjoy Painting in Oils with Paul Taggart’ – which is the companion set for this Series 4; in which Paul is breaking down the layers into detailed guides that will help you to understand the nature of each layer – https://vimeo.com/ondemand/artworkshopwithpauloils3

In this series Paul sets out to demystify the whole experience of working with glazes; so that you can see glaze mixes in their raw form, how they look on the surface and how they interact with each other and underlying textures and colours. We’re trying something really different to do this, something we hope will take the apprehension out of this most beautiful of techniques; so why not let Paul gently guide you through the exciting ‘art of glazing’ – why not let this be THE BEGINNING OF YOUR MAGICAL JOURNEY into the world of GLAZING and what a journey it will turn out to be.

The landscape subject matter is identical across the four sets in this series, so that you can properly assess and compare how [1] glazing mixes interact with each other, [2] how they do so with tonal underpaintingand [3] how they do so with underlying colours and texture – finishing off with [4] the fourth tutorial set, in which you will be combining these various aspects.

We supply free-to-download reference photographs, should you wish to work-along with Paul – you can also work-along on a subject of your own choosing, it is entirely up to you – available from artworkshopwithpaul on Flickr – https://www.flickr.com/photos/paul_taggart_artist_and_author/

Episode 7 – ‘Oils Workshop, Alla Prima, working from Dark to Light, with Paul Taggart’

EPISODE 7 is just as exciting as any other element in the composition, although it may appear relatively simple – treat this as a stand-alone tutorial and you will learn much about how to deal with reflections in water and how to successfully render a ‘wet’ surface. This video is all about the area of wet sand and how the sea water laps over the sandy bay, how light is reflected off its surface, how the two standing figures cast a relfection in the water. This area is equally subject to aerial perspective and you will find Paul saying that to see aerial perspective in an area such as this is all about knowing that it is there and looking for it, looking for the subtle changes of graduated colour that are present. You will learn so much about colour mixing in this video, about successfully identifying the colours you need, about the subtlest of graduated colour mixes. You will learn the value of working with different pressures applied to your brush-strokes, when applying the paint to the surface.

‘Lesson 18 – [Series 4] Learn to Enjoy Painting in Oils with Paul Taggart’

In LESSON 18 Artist & Author Paul Taggart now moves on to Layer 2 for this final study, for which you will be bringing together everything learnt in the previous three versions. You will be working in the traditional oil painting process of painting from dark-to-light and using paint mixes in three distinct layers.

This is the Impasto layer, for which you can work a number of layers working through from dark values to lights; Paul is restricting himself to no more than three for the purposes of this study. Because the impasto Layer 2 needs to dry before applying glazes, this will speed up the process. Furthermore Paul is using underpainting white in his mixes, as this also speeds up drying time, although it doesn’t produce the most textured of impasto mixes; normally he would work with Titanium White (or for those who prefer, Flake White).

Normally, you would be working through the painting from the top of the surface down, in other words from the back of the composition to the front, to help you achieve aerial perspective and overlay elements as you work into the foreground. In this instance, Paul goes through this study in blocks, to ensure he passes on to you the thought process that goes into structuring the impasto layer to receive future glazes. First to get Paul’s attention is the sky and the clouds, followed by the lighthouse and the grassy covering of the peninsular on which it stands.

As with all of Paul’s tutorials – this lesson is filmed in real-time – no editing, no speed-painting, no skipping stages. Everything is shared with you; nothing is left out of either Paul’s demonstration, or his running commentary.

Layer 3 – glazing (which can comprise of as many glazing layers as you wish to introduce)

Lesson 24 opens with Paul completing the last section of impasto to the cliff on the left of the composition – where he uses both brush and painting knife to achieve a variety of texture. The painting was set aside at this point to ensure that this impasto section is dry enough to continue with the final sections of glazes. NOTE : As Paul explains in this lesson, it is imperative to allow any impasto underpainting to dry before proceeding further.

Then it is on to the FINAL AREAS of GLAZING; started in this lesson and completed in Lesson 25. First to get Paul’s attention – the sandy beach that runs between the grassy foreshore and the middle distance rocky beach. This is about light and shade and aerial perspective, easily dealt with in glazes and tints.

Moving forward, glazes are now used to enrich and enliven the various characteristics and tonal values of the swathes of grass, working through from the darkest of accents through to the sun-kissed yellow-green blades of grass.

You will hear Paul say time and again that glazes such as these can be many-layered to effect more and more subtle surface colour mixing. The key here is to experiment, remembering that at any time you can remove an unwanted glaze.

‘Lesson 25 – [Series 4] Learn to Enjoy Painting in Oils with Paul Taggart’

Now you might appreciate our choice of subject, for when this composition is completed the viewer is left wondering what awaits them as they walk round the cliff.

Lesson 25 brings this box-set to a close, in which the entire series of studies has been filmed in real-time and worked through to the natural conclusion for each of the four main studies, preceded by the opening Exercise. Artist & Author Paul Taggart turns his attention to the final areas of sandstone – firstly, the footpath that traverses a large slab of flat sandstone; secondly, the large cliff-face scattered with vegetation, loose earth and bright yellow flowers.

Having previously applied the impasto layer in Lesson 24 and waited for that to dry, Paul is now able to finish off with the final glazes. Another GEM of a LESSON, packed full of hints and tips, especially in regard to how to exploit the glazing medium and the best way to work with appropriate brushes, for an area that features both flat slabs of impasto and brushy texture.

Watch out for those final touches of pure, bright glaze applied to underlying white impasto to render the bright yellow flowers.

Finally … stand back and wonder at the journey through this landscape, which in turn has led you onto the magical journey into glazing.

Throught this series, Paul has purposefully gone against the normal procedure of working through the defined layers; so that you can follow-along at a gentle pace and thereby gain a better understanding of the role of impasto and its influence on subsequent glazes.

You will hear Paul say time and again that glazes such as these can be many-layered to effect more and more subtle surface colour mixing. The key here is to experiment, remembering that at any time you can remove an unwanted glaze.

Lesson 21 – ‘[Series 4] Learn to Enjoy Painting in Oils with Paul Taggart’

Artist & Author Paul Taggart continues to move through the painting in sections, first working up the impasto layer, then, once that is dry, working over it with glazes. You have seen the top third of this painting being treated in this way, now you join Paul as he prepares to work up the impasto layer on the sea and the pebbled beach of the middle distance, as well as the slipway.

Having watched the process and heard Paul’s thought process in applying the impasto layer to receive subsequently applied glazes you are more informed on the influence that impasto has on forthcoming glazes. Moving on, Paul not only attends to the matter of light and shade, but also to the matter of aerial and linear perspective; which involves graduated mixes and varying colour temperatures.

Quite apart from working with directional and variable brush-strokes, Paul also takes the opportunity to show how tonking can be brought into play to effect structural texture and demonstrates another unusual technique, decalcomania.

The message here, being that to experiment with different methods of achieving texture can yield interesting and exciting results, which will be enhanced and enriched by subsequent glazes.

So, once again, Artist & Author Paul Taggart purposefully goes against the normal procedure of working through the defined layers; so that you can follow-along at a gentle pace and thereby gain a better understanding of the role of impasto and its influence on subsequent glazes. The usual method of working through this traditional technique being to work in layers as follows:-

Layer 1 – drawing out : blocking-in with thin underpainting : re-drawing to establish some detail
