Video Games Live – Halo

Recorded on a Nikon D90 DSLR at Video Games Live at the Southbank Centre in London on October 24th 2008 (4pm performance).

We were on the second row, hence the heads that are visible from time to time. Focus is off every so often because the D90 has to be manually focused in video mode.

This was the only complete video I took during the performance. The D90 is heavy to hold up by hand, and I was mostly taking photos anyway. Still, this came out way better than I expected so I wish I had done more.

Photos of other parts of the performance are availabe on my Flickr: http://flickr.com/photos/pabuk/tags/20081024/

UK Accused Of Implementing Lockdowns On The Sly Amid Variant Surge

Boris Johnson

LONDON (AP) — The British government faced accusations Tuesday that it was reintroducing local lockdowns on the sly after it published new guidelines for eight areas of England that it says are hot spots for the coronavirus variant first identified in India.

Lawmakers and local public health officials expressed shock that they hadn’t been made aware of the changes to the guidelines to travel and social interaction that the Conservative government published online last Friday. They also said the guidelines weren’t mandatory and that the mixed messaging could undermine efforts to keep a lid on the virus by creating unnecessary confusion.

In last week’s updated guidance, the government recommended that people within eight localities, including Hounslow in west London, the city of Leicester and the northwest towns of Blackburn and Bolton, shouldn’t meet up indoors or travel outside their areas unless it is for an essential matter, such as going to work.

Keir Starmer, the leader of the main opposition Labour Party, accused the government of behaving in an “utterly shameful” fashion by not informing people in areas affected.

“Local lockdowns are the wrong approach for both public health and local economies,” he said.

In response, the government says it was just putting on the record the guidance that Prime Minister Boris Johnson has presented in the past couple of weeks during the spread of the so-called Indian variant, which critics say was seeded by a too-lax border policy.

“We want the whole country to move out of these restrictions together and we’re trusting people to be responsible and act with caution and common sense as they have done throughout the pandemic,” vaccines minister Nadhim Zahawi told lawmakers.

He insisted that the onus was on personal responsibility and that the government is still intending to take a national approach to lifting restrictions.

In a joint statement, the directors of public health in the eight areas affected said government officials confirmed there are “no local lockdowns” and that everyone is working together to boost testing, vaccinations and to support those people who have to go into quarantine.

The government’s strategy over the past couple of months of lockdown easing has been to lift restrictions on a national basis, though it hasn’t ruled out the possibility of local measures if needed.

Restrictions across England — and the rest of the U.K. — have been lifted over the past few weeks as the number of coronavirus infections has fallen sharply in the wake of a strict lockdown and the rapid rollout of vaccines. Among many changes, the most recent easing has seen pubs and restaurants reopen to customers indoors and the number of people allowed to meet up outdoors increased to 30.

The next easing is planned for June 21 and is intended to involve the lifting of all social restrictions. However, Johnson has warned that it could be pushed back if the new variant spreads widely. A decision on that date is set to be announced on June 14.

Though new cases in the U.K. remain low at around 2,500 a day, against nearly 70,000 at one point in January during the peak of the second wave, they have been inching up slightly in recent weeks.

That’s raised concerns that the so-called Indian variant, which is thought to be more transmissible, is taking off at a time when restrictions have been eased and many younger people have yet to receive a dose of vaccine.

So You’ve Been Publicly Shamed

Price: $9.99
(as of Jul 28,2021 08:45:08 UTC – Details)

Del Rey books

From the Sunday Times top ten bestselling author of The Psychopath Test, a captivating and brilliant exploration of one of our world’s most underappreciated forces: shame.

‘It’s about the terror, isn’t it?’ ‘The terror of what?’ I said. ‘The terror of being found out.’

For the past three years, Jon Ronson has travelled the world meeting recipients of high-profile public shamings. The shamed are people like us – people who, say, made a joke on social media that came out badly, or made a mistake at work. Once their transgression is revealed, collective outrage circles with the force of a hurricane and the next thing they know they’re being torn apart by an angry mob, jeered at, demonized, sometimes even fired from their job.

A great renaissance of public shaming is sweeping our land. Justice has been democratized. The silent majority are getting a voice. But what are we doing with our voice? We are mercilessly finding people’s faults. We are defining the boundaries of normality by ruining the lives of those outside it. We are using shame as a form of social control.

Simultaneously powerful and hilarious in the way only Jon Ronson can be, So You’ve Been Publicly Shamed is a deeply honest book about modern life, full of eye-opening truths about the escalating war on human flaws – and the very scary part we all play in it.

Jon Ronson is an award-winning writer and documentary maker. He is the author of two bestsellers, Them: Adventures with Extremists and The Men Who Stare at Goats, and two collections, Out of the Ordinary: True Tales of Everyday Craziness and What I Do: More True Tales of Everyday Craziness. He lives in London.

The Great War and the Golden Age of Hollywood Horror

Price: points - Details)

Dracula

Every fan of the Universal Horror films of the 1930s knows that James Whale directed four of the best of those films: Frankenstein (1931), The Old Dark House (1932), The Invisible Man (1933), and Bride of Frankenstein (1935). But do they know he served as a Second Lieutenant in the British Army on the Western Front in the First World War, going to France in July 1916 and serving in the trenches? Do they know the details of his service? Do they know he was captured by the Germans in August 1917 and spent some 16 months in a German P.O.W. camp? Do they know he participated with the prisoners’ theatrical troupe while in the camp, and this led to his career on the stage? Do they know the details of how his first big break as a theater director came when he helmed Journey’s End, first in London and then on Broadway, a war play written by R.C. Sherriff, who had also served as a British officer on the Western Front? The details of how his first break as a credited film director came with the movie version of Journey’s End? That The Old Dark House is based upon Benighted, a novel by J.B. Priestley, who also served in the British Army on the Western Front, and that Great War themes figure prominently in both the novel and the film? Do they know about the influences of Great War themes in James Whale’s films? In The Great War and the Golden Age of Hollywood Horror, the reader will explore all these things, in detail, and will also read about other participants in the Universal Horrors who were involved in the War, and how the War influenced other aspects of those Universal films as well-down to the village sets used in nearly every Universal horror movie from Frankenstein through the 1940s. Little, if any, in-depth coverage of these topics exists. This book will take the reader over new ground, while revisiting old subjects with a new twist.

The decade of the 1930s is generally regarded as the “Golden Age” of the American horror film, with Universal as the studio which set the trend. Indeed, the term “horror film” arose when, following the success of Dracula (1930), 1 Universal declared its intention to make “another horror film.”2 That “other” horror film was, of course, Frankenstein (1931). The decade would see a string of horror films from Universal, including Murders in the Rue Morgue (1931), The Old Dark House (1932), The Mummy (1932), The Invisible Man (1933), The Black Cat (1934), Bride of Frankenstein (1935), Werewolf of London (1935), The Raven (1935), The Invisible Ray (1935), Dracula’s Daughter (1936), and Son of Frankenstein (1938). James Whale directed four of these films: Frankenstein, The Old Dark House, The Invisible Man, and Bride of Frankenstein, which are generally regarded by critics and fans alike as among the very best of these Golden Age Horrors. Whale, and other creative talents involved in these films, served with the British Army on the Western Front and saw combat in the First World War. The War influenced other Universal Horrors, as well.

This book will detail the War experiences of these individuals, and explore how those experiences, as well as the War itself, helped to shape Universal’s Golden Age Horrors. In coming up with this idea,

Irish Health Service Shuts Down IT Systems Following ‘Significant Ransomware Attack’

Colonial Pipeline

LONDON (AP) — Ireland’s health service says it has shut down its IT systems after being targeted in a “significant ransomware attack.”

The Health Service Executive said Friday that the move is a precaution, and appointments for coronavirus vaccination have not been not affected.

It was unclear how wide the disruption to the health system was. Dublin’s Rotunda maternity hospital said it was canceling most routine appointments due to the IT issues, calling the situation a “critical emergency.”

“There is a significant ransomware attack on the HSE IT systems,” the Health Service Executive said on Twitter.

“We have taken the precaution of shutting down all our IT systems in order to protect them from this attack and to allow us to fully assess the situation with our own security partners.”

In the U.S., the nation’s largest fuel pipeline was hit with a ransomware attack a week ago. The disruption of the Colonial Pipeline caused long lines at gas stations due to distribution problems and panic-buying, draining supplies at thousands of gas stations. It restarted operations on Wednesday.

The attack highlighted concerns about the vulnerability of critical infrastructure to hacking groups and criminals.

Queen Elizabeth’s Cousin Accused Of Willingness To Sell Kremlin Access

Elizabeth

LONDON (AP) — An investigative report by British media said Sunday that Queen Elizabeth II’s cousin, Prince Michael of Kent, was willing to use his royal status for personal profit and to seek favors from Russian President Vladimir Putin.

The undercover investigation by the Sunday Times and Channel 4 saw reporters posing as investors of a fake South Korean gold company seeking contacts in the Kremlin to further its business in Russia.

Prince Michael, 78, allegedly told the reporters by Zoom that he would give their company his royal endorsement in a recorded speech for a $200,000-fee. He added that he was happy to use his home in Kensington Palace as a backdrop for the endorsement.

The royal’s business partner, Simon Reading, also reportedly told the fake investors that Michael could be hired for 10,000 pounds ($14,000) a day to make “confidential” representations on behalf of the fictitious gold firm, House of Haedong, to Putin.

“If he (Prince Michael) is representing the House of Haedong, he could mention that to Putin and Putin would find the right person who is interested in South Korea or interested in gold,” Reading reportedly said. “It just opens the door, you know, which is so helpful.”

He went on to describe Michael as “Her Majesty’s unofficial ambassador to Russia,” and that tension between the U.K. and Russia has not affected his relationship with Putin.

Responding to the report, Michael’s office said he “has no special relationship with President Putin” and that the two men last met in 2003. The royal “earns his own living through a consultancy company that he has run for over 40 years.”

“Lord Reading is a good friend, who in trying to help, made suggestions which Prince Michael would not have wanted, or been able, to fulfill,” his office said.

Prince Michael and his wife, Princess Michael of Kent, aren’t working royals and receive no public funds, but they are involved in some public duties including representing the queen at some engagements. Michael has represented the queen at state funerals in India, Cyprus and Swaziland in the past, according to the monarchy’s website.

His biography said Michael is connected to Russia through his maternal grandmother, and is the first member of Britain’s royal family to learn Russian. He is involved in charity work in Russia and is patron of the Russo-British Chamber of Commerce.

Reading said he regretted his “over-promise” in trying to facilitate an introduction to Michael.
