[Box-Set Trailer] Series 5 Learn to Enjoy Painting in Oils with Paul Taggart

“Welcome to our Highland Studio and ‘[Series 5] of Learn to Enjoy Painting in Oils with Paul Taggart’, where we are Making LIGHT Work for You’ – the purpose of which is to show you how to look for light in your subject and how to maximise it in your painting; not only through a deeper understanding of the power that coloured greys can bring to your colour mixing palette, but also through the exploitation of the twin traditional oil painting techniques of glazing and tinting.

Work-along with me on this view and you will come to appreciate the quality of light in your subject, whatever the conditions of the day. Even an overcast landscape, on a seemingly dull day, is imbued with light in one form or another. The overall effect may be subtler, but look closely and you will discover myriad colours in the simplest of elements.

This is oil painting at its best, at its richest, at its most subtle, at its most exciting. Work-along with me and discover for yourself the beauty of working with the traditional method of building up layers, from dark to light; using all the techniques covered thus far in Series 1 to 4 of ‘Learn to Enjoy Painting in Oils with Paul Taggart’.

Check out each of the four companion ‘Painting Topical Techniques for Oils with Paul Taggart’ box-sets, from Series 1 to Series 4, to discover even more invaluable techniques, which will apply to this subject matter – such as Aerial Perspective, Structural and Visual Texture and so much more.

As with all our tutorials, everything is filmed in real-time, there is no speed painting here … no editing out … even problems and mistakes are shown, so that you will learn how to overcome them. Work-along with me and follow Eileen’s close-up filming to discover the joy of working with oil paints using traditional techniques, whilst I describe in detail the process and share a host of tips and hints through my running commentary.

You can either work-along with me on the same subject, or use your own, it is entirely up to you – we provide FREE-TO-DOWNLOAD REFERENCE PHOTOGRAPHS available from artworkshopwithpaul on Flickr – https://www.flickr.com/photos/paul_taggart_artist_and_author/

We look forward to your company and as always, send you best wishes for your painting, from Eileen and myself.

‘Lesson 15 – [Series 3] Learn to Enjoy Painting in Oils with Paul Taggart’

The purpose of this series is to break down the three principal layers of this traditional method – we have already covered working with ‘thinned’ mixes in ‘[Series 2] Learn to Enjoy Painting in Oils with Paul Taggart’ – ‘Learn to Enjoy Painting in Oils with Paul Taggart [Series 2] – https://vimeo.com/ondemand/artworkshopwithpauloils2 and in [Series 4] will be covering ‘glazing’ and ‘tinting’.

LESSON 15 and you join Artist & Author Paul Taggart for the finishing layer and working from the back to the front of the composition, you will return to the top of the painting.

Gently does it in Lesson 15, as you seek to balance the painting for the final time. This is where the magic happens. Now you will be adding the ‘sunny’ touches and re-inforcing reflected lights; you will be adding those splashes of subtle colour that bring the painting to life.

You will be working through yellow and blue lights to the final bright, pure-white highlights, those deep lights that reflect the ambient light – this is what makes working with oil paints such an enriching experience.

In this lesson you will also come to appreciate how colours affect each other. Watch as Paul now scuffs in the purple heather – faint in the distant landscape, yet the effect of purple against the greens and yellows does so much to add depth and character to the background rocky hills and steep inclines.

Then it’s onto the trees that surround the distant cottage, where Paul wishes to introduce more contrast, to again develop greater depth and character. Watch as he brings the dark undergrowth into view, where trunks and branches intertwine and catch flecks of light.

And finally, you may feel that the grassy areas were successfully achieved up to now; but watch what happens as Paul introduces those warm oranges and yellows throughout, exploiting directional brush-strokes as he goes to define those grasses that stand tall and erect from those that are flattened out.

As always, this lesson is filmed in real-time so that you can truly work-along with Paul, so that you don’t miss any of his techniques, hints and tips, or any of his colour mixes created from his nucleus six-colour palette. Listen carefully to Paul’s running commentary for those topical tips that only come from years of experience as a professional fine artist whose passion for his craft is something that he loves to share.

The subject for this composition was chosen for its wealth of varying textures; perfect for a painting in which Paul sets out to demonstrate the role of the impasto layer in the traditional method of working with oils – the rocky outcrop, the trees and undulating land (covered in bracken, grass and so on), the sheep, the stone building in the foreground and the whitewashed building in the background, the cinder path. It is also filled with varying perspectives and vanishing points that draw the viewer’s eye. Contrasting light and shade play a strong part in creating dynamism. Here you have everything with which to practice the art of working with bristle brushes.

‘Lesson 9 – [Series 3] Learn to Enjoy Painting in Acrylics with Paul Taggart’

The method and technique used by Artist & Author Paul Taggart in this Series is EQUALLY SUITABLE FOR WORKING IN OILS – building up the impasto layers with acrylics and texture paste, over which you can subsequently apply layers of oil paints, glazes and tints. Perfect for those who wish to work quickly and dynamically, as this method speeds up drying time.

Lesson 9 is full of energy, with rhythmic strokes being applied to suggest form and structure of the many and varied plants and grasses that make up the background against which the rooster emerges. This is not about detail, it is about exploiting the colour mixes, varying strengths of paint mixes and working one single brush to its fullest extent.

Thus far there has been no blending in this composition and so that method continues; for in this series Paul is relying solely on the paint mixes, texture, colour mixing and brush-strokes to achieve everything he needs to portray the subject in as suggestive a manner as possible.

Colour mixing is not only achieved on the palette, but on the surface – relying on the use of complementary colours, variable colour temperatures and the juxtaposition of colours to excite the eye.

Paul works with transparent colour mixes for the initial middle values of green and as colours are lightened, they then naturally become more opaque.

You will find Lesson 9 invaluable on many levels, not least in working with greens and how they are affected by reflected lights and sunlight.

Paul’s running commentary is packed full of encouragement and reassurance, not to mention the many, many tips and hints that are shared as he works.

As ever, filmed in real-time, so that you get to watch everything, miss nothing. As ever, packed full of invaluable hints and tips, for as those who follow Paul know, he does not hold anything back.

You don’t need to work at the same size as Paul, for everything demonstrated in this main composition can be applied to a smaller, or indeed a larger, surface size. What matters is the method of working with impasto to create varied textures, in this underlying textural layer and in subsequent impasto paint layers.

The point of working to this size for Paul is to demonstrate the method in an exciting and expressive way.

You can choose to work-along with Paul on the same subject, or you may wish to try something different – the choice is entirely up to you. ‘Lesson 8 – [Series 3] Learn to Enjoy Painting in Acrylics with Paul Taggart’

Magic happens in this lesson, as you now return to the rooster – from now onwards you will be working through the lights to the finishing highlights. “Painting with light” as Artist & Author Paul Taggart often describes it, will bring this creature to life.

Looking carefully at the subject, observing which colours appear to underlay the overall speckled white of this particular bird is what matters here. You will hear Paul say that “Painting is about looking” as he explains that his directional strokes are being guided by what sees in the subject, he is “feeling” his way around the bird, his brush-strokes are rhythmic, in tune with the rhythms of the feathers, as well as its form; thus creating volume and substance.

This is an object lesson in the value of layering, for here it is used to brilliant effect in suggesting the many layers of feathers; enhanced by surface colour mixing, as the undercolours are allowed to interact with overlaid mixes, not least through the use of varying colour temperatures and exploiting complementary colours. Shadow areas require blue-biased mixes and this is as true of white as any colour mix.

Close-up shots of the surface, as Paul drags his dry brush across the arbitrary and structural texture, show exactly how the technique works, how paint applied with differing pressures is used to effect the feathery nature of the cockerel’s body.

Paul’s running commentary is packed full of encouragement and reassurance, not to mention the many, many tips and hints that are shared as he works.

Understanding the value of colour mixing becomes apparent as you get to see the differences within what appears to be one overall colour on the subject.

‘Lesson 6 – [Series 3] Learn to Enjoy Painting in Acrylics with Paul Taggart’

Now work starts again on the background, from those previously laid darks through the mid-values. This is where you will fully appreciate the nature of those previously laid textures and the arbitrary texture of the surface itself; as brush-strokes are either scuffed across the topmost surface of those textures, or deliberately pushed into the grooves. Either way, you will experience the pleasure in exploiting your brush-work and in applying the paint in a suggestive manner.

Close-up filming will allow you to see exactly how the arbitrary textures and structural textures applied by Paul come into play – you will see exactly how he applies the brush-strokes in this lesson and how they react over the textures. You will see how he holds the brush to exploit directional brush-strokes. Watch those stones come life; you can ‘feel’ the texture over their surface as Paul applies his paint.

Now you will also come to appreciate the work done to date, in creating the dark underpainting and those darker accents – for these will play a crucial role as they interweave with the mid-values and provide a dramatic foil.

This painting is not about painting in detail, but it is about ‘suggesting’ detail. Which is why this subject was chosen for this series in which Artist & Author Paul Taggart demonstrates the beauty of texture, not only its role in creating texture over which you can apply glazes, but as in this series, as a technique in its own right. For this subject relies on texture to create structure, volume and form throughout.

Look at those feathers on the cockerel. Observe the structure and movement in those many grasses and plants. All of which are suggested through the use of textured brush-strokes.

You can also see Lesson 6 as a stand-alone lesson in working with greens, the role of their complementaries – so consider this an object lesson in colour mixing and in creating contrast through exploiting those complementaries.

Follow Paul’s lead and resist the temptation to fiddle around – get those brushes working, get that texture paste onto your palette.

Lesson 9 – ‘[Series 4] Learn to Enjoy Painting in Oils with Paul Taggart’

Lesson 9 is the second episode in the second set of four start-to-finish tutorials, in which the landscape subject matter is identical, so that you can properly assess and compare how glazing mixes interact with each other, how they do so with tonal underpainting, how they do so with underlying colours and texture – finishing off with the fourth tutorial set, in which you will be combining these various aspects. See this as an exercise and concentrate on the glazing mixes, the technique and the results; don’t think of this in terms of a ‘finished painting’.

The purpose of this second version of the simplified landscape is to show how raw glazes work over a tonal underpainting; in this example worked through with one colour, black. It might be worth your while trying this out as several exercises, where you change the underlying tonal colour to see how overlaid raw glazes behave, how the resultant ‘surface’ colour mixing affects your artwork.

LESSON 9 and Paul continues to work through the tonal underpainting, for which he is using acrylics paints (specifically to speed up drying time for the purposes of this tutorial) – you too could start off any of your oil paintings with underlying layers of acrylic, just as you could start off this particular work-along using oil paints – the choice is entirely up to you. You CANNOT however, use acylic paints over oil paints.

Having completed the underpainting, you then move back to the sky and the first of your various glaze mixes, this first one using a fluid oil thinner – NOW YOU WILL EXPERIENCE the way in which the underlying tonal layer affects the subsequently laid glazes and HOW THIS BECOMES PART OF YOUR DECISION MAKING when working with glazes.

Paul could easily have prepared the underpainting in advance of this tutorial – but that would have been the ‘lazy’ option – instead see this as the opportunity to work towards a better understanding of how to exploit a single colour to create tone, depth and volume in a landscape, not to mention maximising light and shade.

In this Series 4, Artist & Author Paul Taggart has seriously stripped down glazing, so that you can see glaze mixes in their raw form, how they look on the surface and how they interact with each other and underlying textures and colours. We’re trying something really different to do this, something we hope will take the mystery out of this most beautiful of techniques.

So why not let Paul gently guide you through the exciting ‘art of glazing’ – why not let this be THE BEGINNING OF YOUR MAGICAL JOURNEY into the world of GLAZING and what a journey it will turn out to be.

We supply free-to-downlad reference photographs, should you wish to work-along with Paul – you can also work-along on a subject of your own choosing, it is entirely up to you – available from artworkshopwithpaul on Flickr – https://www.flickr.com/photos/paul_taggart_artist_and_author/

As with all of Paul’s tutorials – these are all filmed in real-time – no editing, no speed-painting, no skipping stages. Everything is shared with you; nothing is left out of either Paul’s demonstration, or Paul’s running commentary.

PLEASE READ THE VOD page DESCRIPTION and the DETAILED DESCRIPTIONS for EACH LESSON, so that you fully understand how this build-up series works.

‘Lesson 3 – [Series 3] Learn to Enjoy Painting in Acrylics with Paul Taggart’

LESSON 3 and you join Artist & Author Paul Taggart as he continues to build the impasto underlying textural structure for this composition, in which he demonstrates the impact and painterly manner in which texture paste can be dynamically exploited. Texture paste is so much more than a mere ‘craft’ medium, as you will soon discover in this series.

The method and technique used in this Series is EQUALLY SUITABLE FOR WORKING IN OILS – building up the impasto layers with acrylics and texture paste, over which you can subsequently apply layers of oil paints, glazes and tints. Perfect for those who wish to work quickly and dynamically, as this method speeds up drying time.

Check out the COMPANION BOX-SET ‘[Series 3] Painting Topical Techniques for Acrylics with Paul Taggart’ for more on dry scuffing, the Basics of working with Texture Paste, a detailed Exercise and three informative tutorials on achieving texture – http://www.vimeo.com/ https://vimeo.com/ondemand/acrylictechniques3

Even if you are working-along with Paul, your approach to the impasto stage in which YOU WILL BE CREATING THE TEXTURAL LAYER can be unique to you, for the manner in which you apply this textural layer can be as expressive and imaginative as you wish it to be – there is nothing to hold you back. THE PURPOSE OF THIS LAYER is to lay down the structural texture, using different tools, exploiting directional strokes and varying pressures of application. Let loose – let your imagination fly.

Follow Paul’s lead and create your own tools for applying the texture paste – you will soon see how off-cuts of card can be exploited as ‘painting knives’ or ‘spatulas’.

In this layer Paul adds a subtle tint to the texture paste into delineate each area as he works – although this is primarily so that you can see it on camera; you could in fact use this as a tip to help you establish how you approach each area.

Having created texture across the entire surface and left the textural layer to dry thoroughly, Paul then moves on to apply the underpainting layer, using thinned paint mixes. However, he continues to use a textural brush to do so, in order to exploit the arbitrary texture that this achieves from the brush-strokes themselves.

As ever, filmed in real-time, accompanied by Paul’s detailed running commentary, in which he shares his thought process on how he sees this composition working for him.

Part 1 [Series 1] – ‘Learn to Enjoy Painting’ in Oils with Paul Taggart

To start you on this journey into the layering technique of this oil painting project, worked from dark-to-light, Paul explains the nature of oil paints and how they work in use; the principles of layering and the purpose of impasto, glazing and tinting are detailed in full.

Then Paul launches into the painting project, ‘drawing’ out the principal elements; before moving on to ‘blocking –in’ the main masses,

AS WITH ALL OF PAUL’S TUTORIALS – THIS LESSON IS PACKED FULL OF HINTS, TIPS and TECHNIQUES. You will find yourself guided through the next stage in this painting exercise working from the initial stage of blocking in the background, through to the first impasto colour rendering of the sky.

You will now apply the dark ‘lean’ background layer before moving on to re-establishing the elements within the composition.

Having completed that, you will move on to the first impasto strokes of colour – to establish the sky. You will learn an effective method for establishing the graduated colours of the sky, towards the lightest colour at the skyline.

Melding colours through the use of blending, mixing streaky colours on the palette, tips for making the most of loading your brush – all thoroughly explained in Paul’s detailed running commentary.

Today is the last day of “5 days of landscapes” and I want to end it with this picture. The landscape “Before the Thunderstorm” is painted with oil paints in the style of realism. It depicts a flowering field on which a warm summer rain is about to pour.
How do you like this landscape??
