Great Day To Fly A Kite. Panasonic GH4 96fps Graded Version



The original version shot with CINELIKE D( https://vimeo.com/93318259 ) isn’t graded. I decided to see how much I can get out of the image. I used a little sharpening too since the image was a tad soft.
Graded with Colorista II and a little Denoiser was added to clean up the noise in the sky. I pushed the color as much as I could but the 8bit codec just didn’t give me the head room I would have liked. Still not bad at all. I would definitely use it when I need it. Check out my blog for more.

‘beyond words!’ trailer (DV to HD)



A bookworm meets the librarian from HELL…
Only to discover a life ‘beyond words!’

A romantic comedy without the romance! (And it may not really be a comedy either…) (???)

The film stars Tim Nistler as Alvin Preston and Emily York as June Bassetti.

The feature film will be re-released in 2011 as a special Director’s Cut / HD Upgrade that more closely follows the original shooting script.

Vintage DV shot in 1999 from my first film, ‘beyond words!,’ shot on a Panasonic DJ100 with menus in Japanese. It was my first DV camera, and I made only one feature lengthy film with it.

Converted from DV to HD with Red Giant Software’s Instant HD with a touch of color grading in Colorista 2.

Originally composited in Adobe AfterEffects.

I’m finally starting to see DV as ‘vintage,’ meaning that I’m finally starting to appreciate it just a little after a decade of despise and unconcealed contempt.

It has a unique and raw quality about it, and I’m starting to like it… But, just a little. Just don’t expand it outside of the player window, and you may agree! 🙂

It was the only affordable acquisition medium indie filmmakers had to use 10 years ago. Today, almost every HD camera — including the FlipHD and many cell phones — would run circles around it!

It is often painful to show our DV work given the amazing 2k, 4k, 6k images that some cameras are producing.

Still, DV represents a short-lived era in filmmaking. And the Dogme 95-ers from Denmark made some amazing films with it! (See: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dogme_95). My film, too, was shot handheld with natural lighting (mostly), along with many of the other Dogme rules.

I wonder how long DSLR will occupy the space…

Out to Lunch – SLR Magic Anamorphot Test



Some very early clips since receiving the SLR Magic Anamorphot. Initially hoped to use my SLR 25mm CINE lens as the taking lens. Unfortunately the 25mm lens design is not really suitable without support which is not the direction I want to go in right now. In the absence of any other taking lens, I decided on a different approach. Here is footage using a Panasonic 14-45mm kit lens. I was amazed at how easy it was to mount the adapter on the lens (there are several very helpful YouTube videos around) and was immediately able to go film, all hand held.

The lens, while functional and having the benefit of IS, is also not totally suitable for the task due to the sliding zoom housing. If I had to, in a pinch I would certainly use it. I tried the Panasonic 20mm with the adapter which yielded a wonderfully compact system, but again construction wise, it’s not really suitable for what I want to do. While I wait for an alternative, I’m testing it on a variety of other lenses. So far the best results have come from a LOMO 35mm lens and the Helios 58mm. Both have drawbacks for portable use. The LOMO has a rotating front aperture ring which means if you change aperture you have to realign the adapter. But for a controlled shooting environment, it certainly delivers lovely images. The Helios also really needs a lens support as the weight of the adapter binds the focus mechanism.

Travel to – Prague



Traveling to Prague was a personal challenge for me and it was the beginning of a change in the way I think.

It was my first time traveling solo to a new city, out of Spain, with is a foreign language in there. The day before I was scared but I will never regret to have done it. Just a couple days ago, I realised that I fell in love with Prague. I only spent 8 days in the city but for me it was like I had spent more time than that. It was like time stopped. I walked among its streets at my pace over and over again, discovering new places. I could never imagined how much people I met and spoke with in there. It was like if you had the need to talk with people! I met people from Brazil, EEUU, Colombia, Japan, Bilbao, Valencia…

That was when I realized that traveling solo does not mean you have to be alone on your way.
