[Box-Set Trailer] Series 5 Learn to Enjoy Painting in Oils with Paul Taggart

“Welcome to our Highland Studio and ‘[Series 5] of Learn to Enjoy Painting in Oils with Paul Taggart’, where we are Making LIGHT Work for You’ – the purpose of which is to show you how to look for light in your subject and how to maximise it in your painting; not only through a deeper understanding of the power that coloured greys can bring to your colour mixing palette, but also through the exploitation of the twin traditional oil painting techniques of glazing and tinting.

Work-along with me on this view and you will come to appreciate the quality of light in your subject, whatever the conditions of the day. Even an overcast landscape, on a seemingly dull day, is imbued with light in one form or another. The overall effect may be subtler, but look closely and you will discover myriad colours in the simplest of elements.

This is oil painting at its best, at its richest, at its most subtle, at its most exciting. Work-along with me and discover for yourself the beauty of working with the traditional method of building up layers, from dark to light; using all the techniques covered thus far in Series 1 to 4 of ‘Learn to Enjoy Painting in Oils with Paul Taggart’.

Check out each of the four companion ‘Painting Topical Techniques for Oils with Paul Taggart’ box-sets, from Series 1 to Series 4, to discover even more invaluable techniques, which will apply to this subject matter – such as Aerial Perspective, Structural and Visual Texture and so much more.

As with all our tutorials, everything is filmed in real-time, there is no speed painting here … no editing out … even problems and mistakes are shown, so that you will learn how to overcome them. Work-along with me and follow Eileen’s close-up filming to discover the joy of working with oil paints using traditional techniques, whilst I describe in detail the process and share a host of tips and hints through my running commentary.

You can either work-along with me on the same subject, or use your own, it is entirely up to you – we provide FREE-TO-DOWNLOAD REFERENCE PHOTOGRAPHS available from artworkshopwithpaul on Flickr – https://www.flickr.com/photos/paul_taggart_artist_and_author/

We look forward to your company and as always, send you best wishes for your painting, from Eileen and myself.

Episode 1 – ‘Oils Workshop, Alla Prima, working from Dark to Light, with Paul Taggart’

EPISODE 1 and you join Paul on his reference gathering trip, describing his observations/choices and making his thumbnails; then in to the studio and further work preparing for the choice of subjects, drawing out the composition and applying the first underpainting layer of thin complementary colours, which are chosen to provide a vibrant counterfoil to subsequent layers of colour. Think of this episode as a stand-alone tutorial on how to make the most of reference gathering when out and about, not to mention how to work out your composition, before transferring that information to your painting surface.

“Welcome to our studio in the Highlands of Scotland, from where we bring you this complete, start-to-finish, work-along Workshop in Oils, using the traditional techniques of working Alla Prima in layers from Dark to Light – you can download this box-set to own forever, or stream here on Vimeo.

Fully narrated throughout and filmed in real time – as with all of our painting tutorials – I guide you step-by-step through the entire composition, from the first reference gathering, thumbnails and drawing-out, through the layers to the very last strokes of paint with all colour mixes demonstrated on my palette.

SUBJECT – when we select subjects for our tutorials, we carefully choose subjects that would best suit the technique that I am demonstrating – so it is with the subjects featured in this composition; which are intended to help you become more confident about including figures in a landscape, understand the value of aerial perspective and deal with the various angles and perspective of subjects such as buildings and a boat.

TRADITIONAL TECHNIQUES form the keystone of my work as a Fine Artist, so it is with my video art tutorials. For this particular composition, I specifically chose to demonstrate the versatility of working Alla Prima, with impasto mixes, gradually layering through from the dark accents to the lightest highlights – in other words, from dark-to-light, using one of the principal techniques in oil painting that enables an artist to work on-the-spot with a nuclear painting kit. The result is a rich painting filled with texture and character, all achieved through maximising the impasto mixes by exploiting bristle brushes.

As can be seen in this workshop, quite apart from being one of the principal stages in a multi-layered traditional method, the Impasto stage can be used as a stand-alone technique in its own right and excitingly so.

We look forward to your company and as always, send you best wishes for your painting, from Eileen and myself.”

Episode 2 – ‘Oils Workshop, Alla Prima, working from Dark to Light, with Paul Taggart’

EPISODE 2 and now the compositional elements need to be re-established over the thin underpainting. Following this, Paul then shows how to use retouching varnish on a painting that has dulled-down, having been left to dry, to ensure the colours on the surface are enlivened and enriched. Then work begins on the impasto painting, starting with the SKY – which requires the application of graduated colours. Identifying colours in the subject, colour mixing, working in graduated bands of colour from the top of the painting to the horizon, blending – all these and more are covered in this episode. The episode ends with the first beginnings on the turreted building in the background.

Episode 3 – ‘Oils Workshop, Alla Prima, working from Dark to Light, with Paul Taggart’

EPISODE 3 and work continues on the two buildings, firstly developing the turreted building, working through to the super-highlights on the window frames. As Paul demonstrates and you work-along with him, you will come to understand that painting an architectural element within a composition is not about reproducing every minute detail. It is about understanding how light falls across a building and how the differing planes of its structure cast shadows. By working through graduated colour mixes with either a warm bias, or a cool bias, thinking of the areas you are working on as a series of jig-saw pieces, you will successfully render the subject. Paul shows how to simplify the process of understanding perspective – which is all about observation and does not require a ‘technical’ understanding of perspective.

Episode 7 – ‘Oils Workshop, Alla Prima, working from Dark to Light, with Paul Taggart’

EPISODE 7 is just as exciting as any other element in the composition, although it may appear relatively simple – treat this as a stand-alone tutorial and you will learn much about how to deal with reflections in water and how to successfully render a ‘wet’ surface. This video is all about the area of wet sand and how the sea water laps over the sandy bay, how light is reflected off its surface, how the two standing figures cast a relfection in the water. This area is equally subject to aerial perspective and you will find Paul saying that to see aerial perspective in an area such as this is all about knowing that it is there and looking for it, looking for the subtle changes of graduated colour that are present. You will learn so much about colour mixing in this video, about successfully identifying the colours you need, about the subtlest of graduated colour mixes. You will learn the value of working with different pressures applied to your brush-strokes, when applying the paint to the surface.

Flash media for video: what to look for – Filmmaking Tutorial

A recommended SD card:

If you have a camera that uses SD or CF cards, there are a few things you should know before purchasing or using them, and in just 5 minutes you’ll be better prepared!

Subscribe to the channel for these videos: vimeo.com/channels/indiejunkie

The written version:

Buying a tape was pretty easy, despite a few bottom of the barrel ones to avoid, they were all fairly solid and could be relied upon when used with a well maintained camera. But now we’ve moved to flash media, which was just not designed for long term storage, it’s meant as an offload and reuse type of storage. That, and they are a lot more technically intricate than a tape, meaning a lot more can go wrong with it if it happens to be poorly made.

So how do you ensure you buy a well made CF or SD card, or any other flash media for that matter? Use your internet audience! The two main sites i use when buying a new card are Amazon, and Newegg. I don’t necessarily buy it from them(though they do have great prices usually), but rather i use them for their excellent base of user reviews. It’s quite simple really: are there 20 or more total reviews, and are they all or mostly all in the 4-5 star range? Now back up a second, because yes i do of course look at how many gigabytes i need, and how fast the card is, but here we’re talking about reliability. Because it doesn’t matter how fast or big a card is, if it burns out and destroys all of your files!

I’ve had a great experience with Sandisk brand, which is one of, if not the largest producer of flash based media, so they kind of have a lot of experience. But still, they DO have some lemons out there, so no matter what i need, i be sure to check extensively to see if a large number of people have had any issues with a card i’m interested in.

So now that i’ve scared you into reading reviews, the other two issues i want to briefly touch upon, are physical storage and digital storage. That is, how will you store the card, and how will you store the footage you offload from the card?

Please, don’t just use the dinky little plastic case that the card came with, it’s just not fun, nor very protective. There are tons of inexpensive cases for cards, two of which that i find useful are: http://www.meritline.com/waterproof-memory-card-case—p-57839.aspx as well as http://www.meritline.com/memory-card-case-waterproof-multiformat—p-70257.aspx
yes, 5 bucks, and 3 bucks! Buy both! But please do not get tempted by the dollar/2 dollar ones im sure you’ve noticed on that site as well, i bought all of these from the site to test them out, and the dollar ones while better that dinky case your card came with, simple does not stay closed properly and needs to be taped shut. So stick with the two options i’ve linked to, or other well reviewed ones. It’s a tiny investment and can save your footage. Do it.

Lastly, a tip on the workflow front: never, ever, download your footage from your card to just ONE drive. Always make two full SEPARATE drive copies of your files before formatting and reshooting the card. This is just not an option, despite how reliable many hard drives are these days, there are many unreliable ones, so listen to me and make two backups and enjoy never loosing a file.

[Box-Set Trailer] Series 4 Learn to Enjoy Painting in Pastels with Paul Taggart’

Welcome to our Highland studio and ‘[Series 4] of Learn to Enjoy Painting in Pastels with Paul Taggart’.

TECHNIQUE – For the main composition we are working with a three-stage system for creating physical texture. Physical texture may seem a little strange for pastels, which are generally simply applied to pastel paper or to a surface that has a ‘tooth’.

To explain this fully, I refer to the study that was created for [Series 2], the view of an Italian village. In this you will see that all of the textures are created visually; they are ‘visual’ textures that rely solely on the texture of the ‘tooth’ of the surface on which the pastel painting is worked.

Imagine, if instead of simply relying on the tooth of the pastel paper, you could create and therefore control, the texture over which the pastel is laid. This would also allow you the opportunity to create a stronger base, one that would enable you to apply more layers of pastel – which, in turn, gives you the opportunity to exploit the richness of these pigments, much as you would when working in layers with the traditional technique of working from the darkest accents through to the super-highlights.

Furthermore, this controlled application would result in ‘structural’ texture, as opposed to merely ‘visual’ texture. For which I am using texture paste.

SUBJECT – chosen for its variety of ‘structural’ texture. The weathered door, set into a highly textured stone wall, through which we can see a hidden garden beyond (long-since nurtured and gone to wildness). Foreground grasses and wild flowers, give us defining contrast, whilst the distant tangle of plants that occupy the space within the four boundary walls offer us aerial perspective and yet more, varied textures. You can either work-along with me on the same subject, or use your own, it is entirely up to you – for which we provide FREE-TO-DOWNLOAD REFERENCE PHOTOGRAPHS available from my official account on Flickr – – https://www.flickr.com/photos/paul_taggart_artist_and_author/

PREPARATORY COMPOSITIONAL WORK – is covered in our box-set ‘Composition Matters’, in which you can follow the reference gathering, thumbnails, tonal drawing and transference to the painting surface – https://www.

In the ten lessons in this box-set I take you step-by-step from the first strokes of texture paste right through to the finishing highlights on this composition.

Everything you need to work-along with me and, as with all of my tutorials, each lesson is filmed in real-time and nothing is held back.

There is no editing-out, no speed-painting, no skipping stages.

Everything is shared with you, nothing is left out of either my demonstration, or running commentary.

Close-up shots not only allow you to see how the method of application affects the resultant texture, but also show the effect of blending and how pastel strokes can be worked like painting with a brush – which is why I always refer to using pastels as ‘pastel painting’.

We look forward to your company and as always, send you best wishes for your painting, from Eileen and myself.
