Usually issue with Excel connectivity happens when you upgrade your Mac OS (Mavericks->Yosemite) or used Mac OS Migration Assistant. In this case Office removal and a clean install should help. To remove Office – please open Finder and in the Go menu, click Applications, drag the “Microsoft Office 2011” folder to the Trash. Then please follow this guide from Microsoft on how to install Office:
