‘Lesson 6 – [Series 2] Learn to Enjoy Painting in Acrylics with Paul Taggart’



As always FILMED IN REAL-TIME, so that you can see every stroke, every colour mix, every blend, every aspect of the method being used – you will miss nothing, you will be privy to everything that Artist & Author Paul Taggart carries out – seeing his every action, all accompanied by his detailed running commentary.

WORK CONTINUES ON THE MAIN COMPOSITION – a painting within a painting – a landscape within a still-life – which follows lesson by lesson until the final touches.

You can either follow along using the same reference photographs as Paul, or you are welcome to decide on your own ‘View Through My Window’ – the decision is entirely up to you.

LESSON 6 and work continues on one specific area – not as you would come to expect, working from the top of the painting down to the bottom (usually the distant background to the foreground); but, uniquely in this case, from the true distance in this painting, which is the exterior view of the tree and forest, framed within the interior view.

Having ended the last lesson with the first layers being applied to the tree and distant forest/bushes and shrubs; you now continue work on this ‘landscape’ element of the composition.

First to get worked on is that all-important sky, in which ‘negative’ painting comes into its own – watch as Paul “nibbles” into the tree, thus giving the sky a more interesting shape as well as revealing a more dynamic silhouette.

Then Paul turns to the focal point of this landscape, the structural tree – firstly working on the leaf platforms; using graduated colour mixes to work through to the ‘blue’ reflected lights and ‘yellow’ sunlit patches. Although he does hold back on going as far as highlights and super-highlights; after all, this is a distant landscape framed by the window and foreground still-life and as such is subject to aerial perspective.

The branches and trunk are worked up in the same manner, finished off with delicate slices of golden light from the setting sun.

Finally, the first laying down of lights and darks to effect the undulating surface of the grazed field.

You will discover that scuffs and dry paint strokes provide useful techniques for effecting visual texture throughout this area. You will comme to appreciate how varying brush-strokes and directional brush-strokes can be exploited, using one round brush, to depict slabs of colour, ticks of colour, slices of colour, the thinnest of strokes – no need for a raft of different brushes, when a single round brush can offer such versatility.

‘Lesson 11 – [Series 2] Learn to Enjoy Painting in Acrylics with Paul Taggart’



You join Artist & Author Paul Taggart as he embarks on an element in this painting which at first may appear bland an uninteresting, the foreground window shelf. However it is not, for it is actually filled with myriad colours, affected as it is by many different sources of light – sunlight from the late afternoon sun that cuts a swathe through the exterior landscape and through the window; lamplight from the table lamp; reflected ‘local coloured’ lights from surrounding elements and reflective glass.

Watch the effects of surface mixing as the camera pulls back from close-up filming, required to show you the creator/painter how to subtly achieve the bigger picture that is ultimately seen by the viewer.

You will hear Paul say time and again, not to hurry the process, for the work that is required here will serve to enrich and balance painting – at one point imploring you “….don’t be panicked into spoiling this surface….”.

This is a lesson about discovering colour and light, about reading the subject and interpreting what you see.

What is more, this lesson will serve you well if ever you should work on a still-life, for the surface on which the still-life resides within this composition is no different than any other surface on which a still-life is set and is of crucial importance.

Without the work that you will now be putting into this element, your painting will appear flat, shadows will be dismal, structure and form of what is, in effect, a miniature still-life, will appear dead and lifeless.

You will learn how ‘negative’ painting of objects and their shadows is finessed through painting this window shelf. You will learn how to exploit and maximise blending, losing strokes/edges and working restricted wet-into-wet.

Now you will appreciate the importance of the dark underpainting, as it is integrated into your working through from dark to light, using transparent mixes and occasional ticks of opaque light.

Having worked through to the point at which the slabs of light need to be introduced, Paul turns to the wire base of the table lamp. Again, this needs to be worked through gradually so that it is appears deceptively simple to the viewer, but in reality without the work you will now be undertaking, it will look insubstantial; for as Paul says in his running commentary, although your are painting a metal object, this is nevertheless “… an object in light and space…”.

Your careful work will render it three-dimensional, as you introduce structure and form through blending and softening of brush-strokes, the introduction of warm and cool lights, with final ticks of highlights drawing the eye.

In LESSON 5 you now start to establish the darker accents on which you will build forthcoming lights and highlights; as you work from light-to-dark-to-light in layers.

Now is the time to re-draw the vital elements in this composition – but as Paul stresses, this is not about being proficient in drawing; it is about being fluid and loose as you seek to re-establish these elements. Watch at how those ‘straight’ lines are executed by Paul in a suggestive manner, rather than in a rigid fashion.

Having satisfied himself on his redrawing, Paul then turns his attention to those dark colour mixes that are essential in preparing the way for those lights and highlights to work effectively – for as he constantly re-iterates, for the lights to work you first of all need the darks against which they can shine.

Firstly Paul determines the principal light and shaded areas; then he turns to specific areas for development – not as you would come to expect, working from the top of the painting down to the bottom (usually the distant background to the foreground); but, uniquely in this case, from the true distance in this painting, which is the exterior view of the tree and forest, framed within the interior view.

Thus this lesson ends with the first layers being applied to the tree and distant forest/bushes and shrubs. You get the first hints of the deepest recesses, the darkest of darks; then the first hints of reflected ‘blue’ lights and sunlit ‘yellow’ lights.

‘Lesson 10 – [Series 2] Learn to Enjoy Painting in Acrylics with Paul Taggart’



NOW EVERYTHING THAT YOU WORKED ON IN Lessons 1,2,& 3 COME INTO PLAY as work continues on the first of the glass objects that sit on the window shelf.

Artist & Author Paul Taggart opens this lesson by revealing that certain aspects of some of this group of objects and the table lamp need redrawing – although this is the result of painting from one side, as required for the filming of these tutorials; rather than correct these off-camera, Paul is using this as an ideal opportunity to show how to make corrections and changes within a painting that is at an advanced stage.

As such, he proceeds to detail where they have gone wrong, how they can be corrected and even more importantly, sets out some guidng principles for dealing with symmetrical objects such as these.

In essence therefore, the first part of this lesson is a Problem Solver and an invaluable one in giving you the confidence to deal with corrections.

Having worked these through Paul can now move on to the first of the glass objects – the large deep magenta coloured bowl.

Having followed Lessons 1,2,&3 you will now appreciate the importance of working gradually through layers from dark to light. You will have learnt about the influence of surrounding objects in the reflected and sunlit lights on a glass object and how this particular composition is affected by three principal light sources – natural light of the late afternoon sun (affecting both the exterior and interior elements), lamplight emanating from the table lamp and light from the interior of the building. All elements are affected not only by warm light from these sources, but by also by reflected light.

Close-up filming reveals the quality and role of directional strokes, as Paul sculpts the forms of this subtle object which, being a craft piece is made up of varying depths of glass.

Colour mixing and understanding colour values is crucial in effectively rendering this bowl – for although the object itself is made from a single colour by the glass artist, this colour changes when placed in any setting. Here the ‘deep magenta’ colour appears as it’s local colour in some areas, whilst in others it appears more orange in nature.

It is critical therefore to study the object in its surroundings – if you are working from Paul’s photographs, then look closely and analyse the colours you see there.

Firstly you need to lay down the local colour, which is the largest body of colour, in other words the base colour.

Working both wet-on-wet and wet-on-dry is helpful here – the former allows you to meld layers of colour together and helps you achieve those softer qualities that create volume and form; the latter comes in handy when working on sharper aspects, such as those sparkling highlights.

As always, this lesson is filmed in real-time, so you get to benefit from every colour mix, brush-stroke and blend; all accompanied by Paul’s running commentary in which he details his actions, the reasoning behind those actions, the consequences of his actions and much much more besides.

Close-up shots set out to share with you the nature of Paul’s brush work, how the paint appears when applied to the surface, how colours mix visually with underlying colours, how every action affects the end result.

‘Lesson 9 – [Series 3] Learn to Enjoy Painting in Acrylics with Paul Taggart’



The method and technique used by Artist & Author Paul Taggart in this Series is EQUALLY SUITABLE FOR WORKING IN OILS – building up the impasto layers with acrylics and texture paste, over which you can subsequently apply layers of oil paints, glazes and tints. Perfect for those who wish to work quickly and dynamically, as this method speeds up drying time.

Lesson 9 is full of energy, with rhythmic strokes being applied to suggest form and structure of the many and varied plants and grasses that make up the background against which the rooster emerges. This is not about detail, it is about exploiting the colour mixes, varying strengths of paint mixes and working one single brush to its fullest extent.

Thus far there has been no blending in this composition and so that method continues; for in this series Paul is relying solely on the paint mixes, texture, colour mixing and brush-strokes to achieve everything he needs to portray the subject in as suggestive a manner as possible.

Colour mixing is not only achieved on the palette, but on the surface – relying on the use of complementary colours, variable colour temperatures and the juxtaposition of colours to excite the eye.

Paul works with transparent colour mixes for the initial middle values of green and as colours are lightened, they then naturally become more opaque.

You will find Lesson 9 invaluable on many levels, not least in working with greens and how they are affected by reflected lights and sunlight.

Paul’s running commentary is packed full of encouragement and reassurance, not to mention the many, many tips and hints that are shared as he works.

‘Lesson 12 – [Series 2] Learn to Enjoy Painting in Acrylics with Paul Taggart’



Although you may feel that the end of this painting is coming into sight, there are some subtle, yet oh-so-important additions which will lift this to another level and you will find yourself holding your breath as Artist & Author Paul Taggart goes about these. The work done at this juncture is crucial – check for yourself how the painting changes from the beginning of this lesson to the end.

As ever, filmed in real-time so that you don’t miss out on anything, you will be able to work along with Paul at your own pace and along the way will pick up a raft of techniques and invaluable advice and information through being able to watch every brush-stroke, whilst having everything explained by Paul through his running commentary.

Firstly, Paul’s attention is firstly focussed on the window shelf; which is yet to be given that slab of light. In preparation for that, he wants to enrich and enliven the entire surface further, by exploiting colour temperatures and surface mixing. The former, to emphasise the influence of the different sources of light, which vary from the reflected lights of the exterior, to the yellow light thrown by the table lamp; this will in effect strengthen the interplay between lights and darks and shadows. Scuffs and wet-on-dry painting introduce visual texture to the overall surface of the window shelf, giving it added character.

There are two distinct views in this composition, the exterior view and the interior; one being seen through the other and to sustain the overall balance Paul now turns to tints to make the exterior view recede even further and to knock back the middle ground view of the verandah.

This is where you might catch your breath, for the tint that Paul applies may appear way too bright and intrusive; but the reason for this becomes evident soon enough. Watch as he pulls the tint away from the sharpest edges, blending it into the background. Note how in doing this it has the effect of throwing forward the interior view, particularly the table lamp, which now appears to ‘stand’ on the window shelf. This is how to exploit tinting to negatively create volume and form.

Then it is on to the left hand side of the window frame, which is now strengthened with the addition of richer and lighter colour mixes, to emphasise the light thrown by the table lamp.

Finally, to ensure that all lights and shadows are balanced, Paul turns his attention back to the lamp shade, which needs lifting to bring it in line with the enriched window frame and window shelf. This section alone is an object lesson in how to successfully achieve an area of graduated and changing colour, finished off with a central core of the lightest of lights.

‘Lesson 3 – [Series 2] Learn to Enjoy Painting in Acrylics with Paul Taggart’



As always FILMED IN REAL-TIME, so that you can see every stroke, every colour mix, every blend, every tick of super-highlight – you will miss nothing, you will be privy to everything that Artist & Author Paul Taggart carries out.

THERE ARE TWO STAGES TO THIS LESSON – the first being to render the medium lights throughout the glass and the carafe. The second being to attend to the final lights and highlights throughout, including those areas of shadows.

Now you are working up to the final super-highlights – the key to this being to gradually do so; do not rush for you will miss those subtle in-between stages thatwill make all the difference to your finished work.

Opening up this lesson by attending to the metal insert in the neck of the carafe; Paul then picks up where he left off in Lesson 2 – returning to the highlight yellow-white mix which he now brings into the faceted glass, using varying densities of the colour mix.

YOU WILL LEARN HOW TO EXPLOIT THE TRADITIONAL OIL PAINTING TECHNIQUE OF TINTING to achieve the transparency within the glass and within the water. Although working with opaque paint mixes, these mixes can be of varying fluidity and YOU WILL BE EXPLOITING THESE VARYING FLUID MIXES TO CONSIDERABLE EFFECT.

CLOSE-UP SHOTS ARE CRUCIAL in this tutorial as they allow you to see ‘through’ the surface of the painting – so that YOU GET TO SEE HOW THE PROCESS and TECHNIQUES WHICH YOU WILL BE EMPLOYING TRULY AFFECT THE OVERALL RESULT.

MOST IMPORTANTLY YOU GET TO SEE THE ROLE OF SPECIFIC TECHNIQUES such as BLENDING, SCUFFS, DRAGGED BRUSH-STROKES and SOFTENING OFF, FEATHERING, RESTRICTED WET-ON-WET, GRADUAL LAYERING, GRADUATED COLOUR MIXES and so much more besides.

As with Lesson 2, MAGIC MOMENTS ABOUND THROUGHOUT this lesson, such as the manner in which the metal insert springs to life when it’s various lights and highlights are applied.

THIS WILL BE EN EYE OPENER – AN OBJECT LESSON IN how suggestive strokes and ‘blobs’ of colour seen in close-up, appear detailed when viewed at normal viewing distance. YOU CANNOT POSSIBLY BECOME FIDDLY when using a big brush as THIS LESSON ALONE DEMONSTRATES – as you will discover when you watch how Paul manipulates his large brush into the tiniest of nooks and crannies, or adds a fine line of light across the rim of the glass.

THE LIGHT to DARK to LIGHT METHOD USED IN THIS STUDY will prepare you for the ‘View through a Window’; as will the use of technique of working solely with OPAQUE MIXES.

‘Lesson 6 – [Series 3] Learn to Enjoy Painting in Acrylics with Paul Taggart’



Now work starts again on the background, from those previously laid darks through the mid-values. This is where you will fully appreciate the nature of those previously laid textures and the arbitrary texture of the surface itself; as brush-strokes are either scuffed across the topmost surface of those textures, or deliberately pushed into the grooves. Either way, you will experience the pleasure in exploiting your brush-work and in applying the paint in a suggestive manner.

Close-up filming will allow you to see exactly how the arbitrary textures and structural textures applied by Paul come into play – you will see exactly how he applies the brush-strokes in this lesson and how they react over the textures. You will see how he holds the brush to exploit directional brush-strokes. Watch those stones come life; you can ‘feel’ the texture over their surface as Paul applies his paint.

Now you will also come to appreciate the work done to date, in creating the dark underpainting and those darker accents – for these will play a crucial role as they interweave with the mid-values and provide a dramatic foil.

This painting is not about painting in detail, but it is about ‘suggesting’ detail. Which is why this subject was chosen for this series in which Artist & Author Paul Taggart demonstrates the beauty of texture, not only its role in creating texture over which you can apply glazes, but as in this series, as a technique in its own right. For this subject relies on texture to create structure, volume and form throughout.

Look at those feathers on the cockerel. Observe the structure and movement in those many grasses and plants. All of which are suggested through the use of textured brush-strokes.

You can also see Lesson 6 as a stand-alone lesson in working with greens, the role of their complementaries – so consider this an object lesson in colour mixing and in creating contrast through exploiting those complementaries.

Follow Paul’s lead and resist the temptation to fiddle around – get those brushes working, get that texture paste onto your palette.

‘Lesson 8 – [Series 2] Learn to Enjoy Painting in Acrylics with Paul Taggart’



As with all of Artist & Author Paul Taggart’s tutorials, this is FILMED IN REAL-TIME and you will see every stroke, every colour mix, every blend, every aspect of the method being used – you will miss nothing, you will be privy to everything that Paul carries out – seeing his every action, all accompanied by his detailed running commentary.

LESSON 8 is all about the influence of the light in this composition – how the external light of the setting sun affects inernal elements and how the light give off by the table lamp influences those same ellements.

So, don’t consider this merely a stage in this painting, it is so much more than that – simple though it may seem, dealing as it does with the window frame and the beginnings of the stone walls on either side.

By understanding how this works, you will learn so much about how light is critical in bringing things to life – who would think that the mere window frame can have such an impact on this composition? Watch and you will find out and more than ikely be surprised.

This is also a stand-alone lesson in colour mixing, how to prepare a base mix and from that split off into warm and cool mixes.

YOU WILL LEARN about the influence and nature of internal and external reflected lights, about internal man-made light and external natural llight. How to prepare various colour mixes to achieve those nuanced colours in an object that appears to comprise of one single colour, but in fact is affected by the various surrounding light sources.

Having completed the window frame, you will be guided on the frist stages of the stone walls on either side of the window frame – in this composition in which there are several elements that act as ‘frames’ of the view outside and inside.

Paul himself pointed these stone walls and as he explains, painting the pointing that holds the stones together feels very much like he is ‘pointing’ them again. He uses his brush, much like he wielded his trowel – pushing the base mortar between the stones, before smoothing it off and blending it in.

Here again the base colour is lightened towards the llightest reflected lights and warmer lights.

Now you are exploiting negative painting, to sculpt individual stones by rendering the mortar pointing.

Now you are ready to model the stones themselves and move on to the stone window shelf.

‘Lesson 4 – [Series 2] Learn to Enjoy Painting in Acrylics with Paul Taggart’



As always FILMED IN REAL-TIME, so that you can see every stroke, every colour mix, every blend, every aspect of the method being used – you will miss nothing, you will be privy to everything that Artist & Author Paul Taggart carries out.

NOW YOU START WORK ON THE MAIN COMPOSITION – which will continue lesson by lesson until the final touches.

As always Paul starts off in LESSON 4 by working out his composition – you can either follow along using the same reference photographs as Paul, or you are welcome to decide on your own ‘View Through My Window’ – the decision is entirely up to you. Whatever you decide, you will find Paul’s method of working through thumbnails, transferral and initial ‘drawing out’ on your surface to be an invaluable method to prevent you from that oh-so-often bemoaned frustration of starting out in the middle of the surface with no way of knowing how your composition will turn out.

Take your time in determining the elements that you wish to include in your composition; work on those thumbnails, initial shading and transferral and you won’t go far wrong.

Paul does not rush at this stage – instead he explains every one of his decisions, his aims for this painting and how he intends to manipulate the various elements to their best advantage and that includes elements such as reflected lights and sunlit aspects, not to mention the outside landscape which can be viewed through the window.

Finally, this lesson ends with the first layer of thin colours, being applied to ‘block in’ the main components of the composition, in this painting in which you will be working from light to dark and then to light again.
